I just wanted to say a few words about Kate Offord and her coaching Business “Smiling Tri Coach”......I first started working with Kate in March 2016 after returning from Dubai to Manchester to live. Since working with her my times for 70.3 distance Tris had dropped from 7 hours 45 mins to 6 hours 10 mins. She is the most positive yet pragmatic coach I have met and her straight forward approach pay dividends. I now live 12000 miles away in Auckland and still have the good fortune to be coached by her. I cannot therefore recommend her highly enough. Here is a recent picture of me enroute to another PB in New Zealand.
Kate has coached my children since they started in the development squad of our swim team. Since then they have progressed under Kate's guidance to swim for Trafford and more recently my son's school swim team guided by Kate have progressed to the national primary school championships.
In the last year my children have shown an additional interest in cross country running, and with one to one tuition from Kate they have progressed from running in their school run club to top finishes in the John Leigh and Sale Harriers runs.
Kate is the perfect mixture of being tough but fun. The sessions are hard, focused and technical but she still somehow manages to engage the children and make them want to come back for more.
I have been training with Kate and Mel for my first triathlon. I wish I had found them sooner! Kate’s input with my swimming has been a game changer. Mel’s plans and wise words have really focused me immensely. As a busy working Mum, they understand my needs perfectly and I would recommend them for all your coaching needs. When you are having a bad day, they recognise this and gently inspire you to push harder with training but also understand the holistic approach to training and being smart in your training schedules. A wonderful team
I’m not a runner, but I’m certainly feeling like one now. I honestly can’t rave enough about the amazing support (psychological) and advice (practical) from Mel for my marathon training.
the reporting in each week meant that I stuck like glue to the advice and its paid off, I ran the wrexham 20 miler and enjoyed it!! I even managed a sprint (for me) finish. Next stop the Marathon.
KATE WOODWARD NUTT
I wasn’t sure if Kate would be interested in coaching a 50+ year old with a very limited history of exercise so I was delighted that, without hesitation, she took me on. Over the past two years Kate has supported, inspired, encouraged and challenged me to continue to achieve just a little bit more than I thought was possible.
My husband, Richard, is now also working with Smiling tri coach. He and I have very different motivations and different approaches to training and competition and the combination of Kate and Mel is perfect for us. They even coordinate training sessions when possible so we can have date night on the turbo!
In 2015 I ran my first two half marathons. I got the same time for both and really wanted to improve so I asked Kate for help.
Kate’s help and her Smiling Tri Coach run plan helped me knock 8 mins off my half marathon PB. I am aiming to go even better on my next half!
For my next challenge I really wanted to try triathlon. However I have always struggled with swimming and was fearful of the water. Smiling Tri Coach’s guidance and one-2-one sessions have helped me immensely. I can now swim front crawl with confidence after years of staying in the shallow end and being afraid of putting my face in the water.
I never thought I would be able to run half marathons let alone complete triathlons. Smiling Tri Coach showed me that I can!
I have really enjoyed working with Mel at Smiling TriCoach, training for the Fred Whitton Challenge. Despite the chaos and unpredictability of my diary Mel has developed a personalised training programme that makes the best use my available time. The results speak for themselves. Since we started at the end of November, and despite the excesses of Christmas/New year, I have achieved a 9% increase in FTP and lost close to a stone in weight. Bring on the Fred.
I first met Kate on my British Triathlon Level 1 Coach Course and I was immediately drawn to her expertise and philosophy on training. I was inspired by her methods and understanding of Work:Life balance while training to a high level of fitness. I was already on my fitness journey and later in the year completed an Ultra Marathon 15km swim. The swim went very well but also highlighted swim stroke issues which brought back an old rugby league shoulder injury. Rather than just rehab the injury, to get to the root cause of the injury I engaged the services of the amazing smiling coach Kate.
We started with a short phone call and I immediately knew she was the right option to improve my stroke and fitness. Since our first meeting we have made great improvements in my running, cycling and swimming technique. Following a swim video session my stroke has been corrected and her attention to detail and expertise in rehab techniques have reduced my injury risk, with the added bonus that any slight niggle or muscle strain is analysed and corrected through thorough strength and conditioning guidance.
Living sixty miles from my coach has never been an issue as we have weekly calls, video calls and coffee catch ups every few months. Providing home-made video guidance and with training peaks, my sessions are planned and sent to me, easy to follow and allow us to analyse my performance. Kate really makes me feel we are both working towards my goals as a team. She cares about my well-being, performance and has become an extended family member. Her personality and professionalism make her a pleasure to work with and when the chips are down she’s only a phone call away to share encouragement and her vast experience which shine through to get the best from me.
If you want to meet your goals while maintaining a busy work : life balance and get chance to work with Smiling Tri Coaches then I highly recommend you invest in yourself. Don’t just take it from me, call Mel or Kate and be inspired.
I have been working with Kate for nearly two years both as a swimmer and as a beginner triathlete. In that period I have seen my swimming improve and my fitness improve massively. Having Kate as my coach has focused me on quality not quantity and targeted the sessions on what works for me as opposed to what works for a group. Anyone wanting to swim faster or compete as a triathlete should use STC. Money well spent. Better value than a new bike. Although as a result of the training I felt fast enough to buy a new bike and not look out of place on it.
Before I started working with Kate, I had started picking up running niggles and I was didn’t think I could train for a marathon injury free. With Kate’s careful coaching, I built a good foundation for building up miles and I got to my marathon with no injury in sight! Kate taught me the importance of steady runs to get faster as well as being able to run further.
… I guess like many of us, I am never going to be an Age Grouper (and if I were, I am starting the sport a little late). After a period of illness, Kate helped me to balance and structure a hectic unpredictable working life and busy personal commitments, enabling me to surpass my goal of an Ironman 70.3. With Kate’s continued support an encouragement, in September 2017, the year of my 40th Birthday, I completed Ironman 70.3 Superfrog in a time of 5:24’30”. With Kate’s ever expanding coaching network, I am now embarking on my next adventure! I highly recommend The Smiling Tri Coach, to anyone wanting to get the best out of themselves and realise their true potential – what’s more, do it with a Smile!
